Targeted to planners, municipal officials, business owners, and concerned citizens, this free public program will offer constructive strategies that communities can use to promote economic development while preserving scenic values.
The program will be delivered by Ed McMahon, a nationally known and thought-provoking speaker who is regarded as a leading authority on topics related to sustainable development, land conservation, smart growth and historic preservation. A Senior Fellow with the Urban Land Institute, McMahon argues that while America is a leader in environmental protection, the “special character” of our cities, towns, and countryside is quickly disappearing.
In his talk, he will address how scenic landscapes are an economic asset and how preserving community character helps increase property values and tourism spending. He will also discuss the importance of guiding desirable development away from environmentally sensitive and distinctive places, and will explain the tools communities can use to avoid conflicts between conservation and economic development.
Certificates of Completion will be issued for Planning & Zoning Board members seeking continuing education credit. In addition, the workshop has been approved for 2.0 CM credits by the American Planning Association.
